Ko Maak Island

Ko Mak

There are no foreign lands
It is the traveler only who is foreign

Robert Louis Stevenson

Ko Maak may seem like a million miles from nowhere but you only really discover the true feeling of how Robinson Crusoe may have felt once you are actually on this island. A slice of heaven seduced by a peaceful pace of life with almost total seclusion, this primarily overlooked tropical island gem may just be your calling.

Also known as Ko Mak, this small piece of paradise is part of an tropical archipelago of 52 islands situated only 20 kilometers or 12 miles south of
Ko Chang on the far east coast of Thailand.

Shaped in the form of a cross measuring just sixteen square kilometers, the island has no public transport of note. Travel around the island is either by rented motorbike or bicycle although walking may be a more preferable option.

I am led to believe that you can with relative ease, circumnavigate the entire perimeter of the island in less than ten hours by walking, wading and swimming.

Although a small network of earthly amber tracks twist and turns throughout the island, there are few developed roads creating the perfect opportunity to you to explore the jungle like interiors while uncovering a few almost deserted beaches.

The island is home to no more than a few hundred local Thai's who make a living from fishing and the abundant coconut and rubber plantations that dominate the whole island.
