I have compiled a musical Jazz Festival Guide to some of the upcoming concerts that will be held in Bangkok during 2011. The Bangkok Guitar Fiesta is one such collaboration that is sure to showcase a high level cultural experience and provide you with the many great guitar superstars of Jazz, Classical and Flamenco.
These presentations are organized by AMI Events and supported by the Australian and Spanish Embassies. Events take place from Friday February 25th to Sunday February 27th 2011 in the Small Hall at the Thailand Cultural Centre.
There will also be a workshop held on Sunday February 27th, in Conference Room 1 at the centre. Tickets for this will only be issued together with a concert ticket.
Prices for the one day shows are 600 baht, 1,200 baht and 1,600 baht. You can purchase tickets at 1,400 baht, 2,700 baht and 3,600 baht respectively for all three days. For ticket reservations go to: http://www.thaiticketmajor.com
There is an Annual Jazz Festival held at Central World Plaza in the center of Bangkok. It's a popular event which I believe usually takes place from March 9th until March 14th. Here you'll get to see mainly all-time favourites from around the Asia-Pacific circuit. Their style of jazz is absolute listening pleasure, easy on the ear with lots of toe tapping too. It's most popular with locals but foreigners seem to love the vibe. The event also hosts a number of big international players too.
Bangkok Guitar Fiesta Players
Martin Taylor who hails from United Kingdom, is an award winning jazz guitarist. He has established himself as an internationally acclaimed musician and his unique style is recognized worldwide as the foremost exponent of solo jazz guitar playing.
He will perform at the Thailand Cultural Centre on Friday February 25th from 19:30 pm. and again on Sunday February 27th at 15:00 pm until 17:00 pm.
Slava and Leonard Grigoryan who hail from Australia, are classical guitarists. Slava was born in 1976 in Kazakhstan and immigrated with his family to Australia in 1981. He achieved recognition as a major prizewinner at a Tokyo International Classical Guitar competition after which he was signed up in 1995 by the Sony Classical Label. Since then Slava has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the London Philharmonic and the BBC Concert Orchestra.
Leonard was born in 1985 in Australia, and began studying guitar with his father at the age of four. He has performed publicly from the age of eight and achieved success in many competitions. He appeared as a solo artist with the Melbourne and Queensland Symphony Orchestras, the Melbourne Musicians Chamber Orchestra, and the Academy of Melbourne. He has also undertaken tours to Europe and the US.
They will preform at the Thailand Cultural Centre on Saturday February 26th from 19:30 pm. and then again on Sunday February 27th at 12:30 pm until 14:30 pm.
Victor Monge Serranito, who hails from Spain, is a legendary hero of traditional flamenco guitar. He is one of those composers who can mix ingenuity with such a fragile balance so as to achieve amazing perfection. His music embodies images of romanticism and classical charm. This forms the very essence of his compositions and will surely reflex in the the musical themes he performs on stage.
He will preform at the Thailand Cultural Centre on Sunday February 27th from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. and again the same day from 19:30 pm.
Victor, Martin and brothers Slava and Leonard Grigoryan will share with you their virtuosity, musicianship and creativity in both the concerts and in the workshops.
Thailand Cultural Centre
Jazz Festival Classical and Flamenco Guitar Concerts
Thailand Cultural Centre is a performing-arts venue in Bangkok and the Small Hall where the Jazz festival, Classical and Flamenco guitar performances are held, is a 500-seat multi-purpose auditorium. The venue is located on Ratchadaphisek Road, close to the junction with Tiam Ruammitr Road in Bangkok's Huai Khwang district.
The easiest way to get there is by taxi or Tuk Tuk but you can take the Bangkok Metro to the Thailand Cultural Centre Station. However the train route can be a little bit misleading because the the actual venue from the station is a tortuous 10-minute walk away which involves the crossing of a dangerous busy road.
