January Festival Guide

This is your January Festival Guide to all the many events and celebrations held around one of the most beautiful country in the world. Thai people just love to celebrate with most regions in Thailand having their own brand of entertainment. Small temple fairs up country are great fun to attend and also help to raise money for repairs to temple buildings. There is almost always music and dancing at these fairs as well as carnival rides for the kids, traditional theater and lots of delicious food to go around.
New Years Day. January 1st is a public holiday. Pra Buddha Chinarat Fair is celebrated in honour of this most sacred Buddha which is enshrined at Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat in Phitsanulok in Northern Thailand. Not only is this a religious festival, there are many other kinds of entertainment at this fair. You can also watch local theater as well as Ram-Wong dancing, which is a kind of folk dance to the rhythm of drum beats. This fair also includes a display of large straw birds. Don Chedi Memorial Fair is an event that lasts for seven days in the town of Suphanburi in Central Thailand to commemorate the epic battle fought and won by King Naresuan against the Burmese at Don Chedi in 1592. This victory is still celebrated today with lots of entertainment and local handicraft stalls. Fresh water fish is a speciality here so if you are a fish lover, why not go and spoil yourself any number of the fine restaurants in the area.

Bo Sang Umbrella Fair is held in the main street of Bo Sang, a village near Chiang Mai. This fair celebrates the tradition and skill of umbrella making as well as other handicrafts. Painting exhibitions together with cultural performances and the Bo Sang beauty pageant are also held here. Famous for their vibrant colours and floral motifs, now is a good time to purchase any number of the beautiful paper umbrellas on sale. Please do remember that the dates for this event are subject to change but you can contact me should you wish to know more about this festival.
