Rambutan Fruit

Rambutan Fruit

Rambutan Fair Festival is celebrated each year during the month of August in the province of Surat Thani. This is where the first Ramutan Tree was planted in the early 1900's. To get to the province of Surat Thani, situated in the Gulf of Thailand, you would need to travel approximately 640 kilometers or 380 miles south of Bangkok. This southern region of Thailand is home to mostly Thai Muslims.

You might ask yourself... what is a Rambutan? Well it's similar in look, size and taste to our Lychee. Although it's outer skin is covered in "hair" and has a mostly reddish colour, the inside has a milky or pinkish colour with a sweet, slightly acidic flavour. This fruit is believed to be native to the Malay Archipelago. The word Rambutan in Indonesian or Malaysia literally means hairy or hairy fruit. See the photo above.

Each year, the Rambutan fair is held to highlight this particular fruit. The fair also includes exhibitions of other local products and floats that are adorned with Rambutans. There are many other exhilarating fun-filled activities to join in with while you are here.
